Straight talk on loans for the Big Three
Sayeth The Maverick:
“I’m here to send a message to Washington and to Wall Street,” McCain said. “We’re not going to leave the workers here in Michigan hung out to dry while we give billions in taxpayers’ dollars to Wall Street. We’re going to take care of the workers. The workers, they’re the ones that deserve our help. It’s time to get our auto industry back on its feet. And it’s time for a new generation of cars and for loans to build the facilities to make them.”
That’s some straight talking he’s doing there. Some straight talking. Here’s more straight talk from The Maverick a month ago.
On a local note, McCain told reporters at the Townsend Hotel that he doesn’t think it’s prudent to promise loan guarantees for the auto industry to help with economic problems.
“I’ve had meetings with the Big 3 and they are confident with the new hybrids, flex fuel vehicles and other technological advances, that they will succeed,” he said. “I worry about us predicting failure on the part of automakers when they’ve made strides on things like labor agreements.”
And, a month before that.
He did not explicitly endorse a bailout. But as recently as June 26 in Ohio, McCain said he would oppose federal action to bail out domestic carmakers if they continue to lose money.
In his news conference, McCain did not address the question of bailing out the mortgage firms. He said he would offer several forms of aid to automakers, including research assistance, but did not address his previous rejection of a carmaker bailout.
And, less than a month before that.
Instead, he reiterated that if elected in November his plan is to invest in research and development. “I would like to invest American federal dollars in pure research and development as we move forward with new technologies, whether they be flex fuel or whether it be hydrogen or whether it be the electric capability,” he said. After developing such technologies “we’ve gotta hand it over to the private enterprise and the automotive companies.”
What’s changed? Well, naturally, the polls here got tighter, and Michigan has moved from being a lock for Obama to a couple-point race.
(As an aside, and for those who are curious, all this straight talk has enraged Michelle Malkin to the point where her blood pressure is apparently elevated over the specter of loans to automakers.)
